Choosing a major is an important decision that all college students must make and the Center for Career Exploration and Development (CCED) is here to help! By utilizing the resources on this page, working one-on-one with a career counselor, and/or participating in one of our Exploratory Career Coaching Groups, you will be equipped with the strategies to decide on a major that works best for your career goals.

Career assessment tools are available to use with the counseling staff when determined to be appropriate. These will help you to identify a possible academic major as well as a career area that might relate to your values, interest, skills and abilities. The instruments that we use include the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory.

Examine Your Interests, Skills, and Values

Take free assessments with CCED, and visit the Occupational Information Network (O*Net), which provides information about the typical skills, interests, abilities, values and knowledge required for various occupations.

Research Potential Occupations

View the What Can I Do With A Major In_______? Sheets; visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which provides information for hundreds of jobs on the following: training and education, earnings, what you do on the job, related occupations and more; shadow professionals; conduct informational interviews; and use the CCED Resource Center.

Get Involved

Try out different courses; join clubs, organizations and teams on campus; intern and volunteer for experience; or work part-time and summer jobs for experience.

Meet with a Career Coach

Talk one-on-one with a Career Engagement Specialist who can help you explore your unique interests, skills, values and options through individual appointments.

Meet with your Academic Advisor

Plan out your semesters/coursework for the major(s) and minor(s) in which you’re interested, while considering any study abroad, internships, and/or graduation plans you have.
