Last Week, a workshop was held to help students in preparing for exams and in establishing good study habits. The workshop helped by causing students to determine how much time should be putting into their studies, and whether their methods of studying are effective and productive. Also, an important factor of test taking that was strongly emphasized- AVOID CRAMMING. It never works so don’t do it. As the workshop continued, students were given steps to better prepare themselves before an exam. At the workshop, food was provided, so if you didn’t attend, you missed out.

Here are some major points that were established:

  • Preview the material for 15-20 minutes before classes.
  • Once a week, review the material to get a more complete overview of the information.
  • Start studying for an exam 1 week before exam
  • Break up the material into parts and cover a little each day.
  • Follow 6-Step Plan:
    1. Get a blank piece of paper and outline the material you need to study.
    2. Break the material into smaller chunks and study each one.
    3. The next step is to work with someone else to clarify anything that's confusing.
    4. Learn and Memorize material until it is in brain to be easily retrieved.
    5. Test self or have others ask you questions about material and see how well you know it.
    6. Work on weak areas and do a general overview of the material

We will be holding more workshops like this as the end of the semester approaches.

Waking up early on a Saturday morning was no fun, but the rewards from Books Thru Bars make the effort all worth it. This past Saturday (Nov. 7th), a group of us got together and headed down to the Commons for some community service at Books Thru Bars. Some of us had already been to BTB, but the experience of being there is always refreshing and humbling. The fact that we are able to bring prisoners from all across the nation entertainment through literature, that they otherwise would not receive, is a great feeling every time you wrap the books and send them away. Prisoners are deprived from basic human rights, and only our willingness to take time out of our schedules to read their letters and send them books is perhaps one of the few signs of freedom they ever get to experience. Books Thru Bars should be recognized for their cause, and volunteers like us are the biggest resources BTB has as well as the prisoners.

We want HEOP to keep going consistently, so if you missed this passed week just stay on the look out for our new events going to Books Thru Bars, as well as other community service events. The event was fun and Pizza after was great.

I want to give special shout out to everyone who showed up:
Ronie B.
Tiffany V.
Chris M.
Massiel M.
Richard O.
Channelle J.
Miguel R.

Good luck with everything to all.

God Bless,

Miguel Rodriguez

A few weeks ago, HEOP also had a workshop on Library Databases. It was an informational session on how to use all the online databases available and how to navigate the Ithaca College Library website. Students that attended the informational session explored the website, different browsers, and the importance of a works cited page.
Students also had the opportunity to meet with the librarians who help students with all research assignments. Everyone got a chance to work hands on with all the databases and learned their importance. Being able to navigate these systems is extremely important not only to be able to do necessary research assignments, but also to be able to know that the information is scholarly.

I hope everyone keeps attending these meetings as they are provided only for your benefits. Hopefully everyone had a good fall break and keep working hard!

Hows it going everyone? I hope everyone is well and is staying healthy!

A couple of weeks ago HEOP had a time management workshop in the Taughannock Falls Room. It was a very informative workshop on time management and how it plays a crucial part in not only your college experience but throughout life. Those at the workshop participated in a time management activity which made them think about how much time they spend on certain activities. Many issues were bought up in the workshop such good times to study, when to take a break, and how to utilize those breaks between classes. There was also some great food at the workshop.

Many freshman, including myself, struggle with time management in this new environment we call college. Time management is an important skill to learn and master in life. Many things here at Ithaca College are new to 1st year students and these workshops are meant to help us adjust to many of these changes and how to utilize the resources around us. There were a low number of students at the time management workshop but in the future I hope to see more faces at these workshops.

Here's a slide show of the workshop, check it out!

much love,

Chris

-So this week I found out some info on the business major. As a business major, you have to fulfill business approved liberal arts electives. When I was an underclassman I thought any liberal arts elective class counted as a business school approved liberal arts elective. It turns out it is only certain courses will fulfill your business major liberal arts electives as opposed to any liberal arts course.

-There's a green list of all the approved courses. But in reality, it is really not that bad. Almost every department at the college has approved courses. A lot of courses I have taken just for fun turned out to be approved liberal courses. Now for my last semester of senior year I can take any kind of courses I want since I have already fulfilled all my approved liberal arts courses.

Stay tuned for my next update. Till then, browse around the Business School site, there are cool sources to check out.
