True Lies and Other Stories: Joy Adams and the Evolution of Mad Sally offers Handwerker Gallery visitors a chance to reconnect with Mad Sally, the protagonist of Joy Adams' paintings, who first appeared in the Gallery eight years ago. With her monumental depictions of Sally, Adams redefines the notion of the hero by presenting an outsider who transcends accepted notions of gender and age. She weaves truth and fantasy in these lushly-painted canvases that are instilled with tradition and simultaneously construct contemporary narratives. Cosponsored by the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies, and the Judi and Jay Linden Center for Creativity and Aging.

The Discussion Series is a yearly event hosted by the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity. Our theme for this year is "Chaos or Community? MLK and the Politics of Resistance," borrowing from the title of Martin Luther King, Jr's book. Since 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of MLK's death, we want the series to enable critical engagements with and interrogations of his work. We will look at retrospectives of his life and explore some of the themes he wrote about, such as anti-racist and antiwar movements, resistance to oppression,
critiques of capitalism and poverty, civil disobedience, and theologies of liberation.

The Ocotillo Winds are a refreshingly entertaining breeze from the desert Southwest. Primarily a woodwind trio, the 2008 tour program features the addition of flutist, Elizabeth Buck with: oboist Martin Schuring; clarinetist Robert Spring and bassoonist Albie Micklich. With repertoire from the French countryside, the Brazilian rainforest and downtown Phoenix, their concerts are anything but dry. Music of Bozza, Carter, Levitin, and Francaix.
