Computer labs provide application software, network and Internet access for you to do your work. ITS operates about 30 computer labs on campus, both general-access and program-specific facilities with specialized software that meet the needs of specific courses. ITS labs are equipped with Windows and/or Macintosh computers and may also have printers, scanners or other equipment. Some labs have ResNet connections for registered laptops. Computer labs are open at various times and schedules are posted on each lab door.

Getting Started in the Labs

Before you start working in ITS labs, you'll need to log into Novell. Your Novell account username is the same as your email username, and your initial password is the last 6 digits of your Ithaca College ID.You will be prompted to change your password immediately - please do so for your own protection. Your account comes with 50MBytes of storage in your home directory on the NOVA server. You are the only person with access to your folder [except for system administrators]. After you finish using a lab computer, don't forget to log out to protect your personal data. See the Using a Student Novell Account Quick Guide, also available in labs and the ITS main office. To access Nova from off-campus using FTP, check out these online Quick Guides.

Software

ITS supports a wide variety of software for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentations, desktop publishing, conferencing, email, and browsing the Web. Our standard suite of production software includes Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Dreamweaver, Photoshop Elements, WS-FTP, Acrobat, and virus protection software.
Additional software is available in most labs. Check the Special Software list.

Printing

Black and white laser printing is available at no additional cost to students. Please limit your printing to one final copy of your file in an effort to conserve paper and toner. The printers are not to be used like copiers. Duplex printing is the default setting. Color printing is not available in the labs.

Getting Help

During general access lab times, a student consultant will be present to answer any questions.

Consultants will...
  • Try to answer all computer related questions. If the software is department-specific or specialized, they may have to send you to the professor or the TA for the class
  • Be helpful, friendly and courteous
  • Uphold the rules of the lab: no food, no cell phones, 1 final copy printing
