Learning Goals

Students are invited to consider the learning goals for majors within the Division of Interdisciplinary and
International Studies (DIIS).

CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION
1.    Students learn to create and present critical arguments in written and oral forms.

2.    Students articulate multiple concepts of the terms “culture” and “communication,” demonstrating significant commonalities and differences between ways of understanding abstract concepts.

3.    Students demonstrate proficiency in a language other than their native one at a level appropriate to beginning study in a culture in which that language is spoken.

4.    Students demonstrate an understanding of different media (film, television, radio, internet, speech, and writing) producing different messages and different effects.

5.    Students are able to demonstrate interdisciplinary ways of approaching topics and synthesizing multiple methods and approaches.

6.    Students are able to apply theoretical study to real-world situations.

LEGAL STUDIES
1.    Students will clearly articulate the conjunction of law, politics, social, and ethical issues.

2.    Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental legal concepts.

3.    Demonstrate the application of analytical skills, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

4.    Able to use electronic data bases for legal research.

5.    Demonstrate skill in all areas of writing.

AGING STUDIES
Through a liberal arts foundation, interdisciplinary gerontology coursework, experiential learning, and a concentration, the Ithaca College Aging Studies Major will prepare students to:

1.      apply theoretical perspectives related to the study of aging;

2.      integrate information and perspectives from various disciplines to understand the biological, psychological and social aspects of aging;

3.      conduct basic research and present results; read, analyze and use research-based  information;

4.      understand the development of US aging policy and its impact on programs and services for older adults; and

5.      apply knowledge from aging courses and their chosen focus area in a work or educational setting.
