Join Us in Transforming our World

Committed to inclusivity, social justice, and the intellectual empowerment of each student.

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is a flexible, interdisciplinary program that provides opportunities for feminist study, research, close collaborations with faculty, internships, and community involvement. Our classes interrogate power and privilege, and explore how gendered inequalities are perpetuated, maintained and subverted.  Students investigate how gender and sexuality are constructed and interact with other social categories, such as race, class and nationality.

We support intellectual projects and activities that foster community on our campus, and that contribute to the production of knowledge about women, gender and sexuality from an intersectional perspective.

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) is an interdisciplinary program comprised of students and faculty from across the five schools at IC.

Announcing the MAJOR!

Ithaca College has had a Program in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies since 1994, but it was only in 2021 that it became available as a major.

How We Work

  • Our courses are highly participatory and student-centered; they feature transformative pedagogies and encourage nuanced, critical thinking about some of the most urgent and challenging questions of our times.
  • Our faculty is committed to inclusivity, social justice, and the intellectual empowerment of each student.
  • Our program provides ample opportunity for choice, as students select coursework from a great array of disciplines that, together, will acquaint them with the rich interdisciplinarity of the field.
  • Students can explore psychology, sociology, politics, history, literature and art, among other disciplines, through the lens of feminist, critical race and queer studies.

Our Name

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies as a discipline is in a constant process of redefining its terms, hence the renaming of our program from Women's and Gender Studies to Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in 2014. This transformation was not just nominal; it reflects our efforts to promote the ongoing study of genders and sexualities and to build a more inclusive community.
