"Believing Women" in Islam (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2002)

Barlas, associate professor and chair of the politics department, posits that the meanings ascribed to the Qur’an depend on how it is read. Presenting Islam through its sacred scripture rather than through Muslim cultural practices or Western interpretations, Barlas argues that Qur’anic teachings affirm equality of the sexes.

Pete Giroux, M.M. ’90, and George Giroux, Reflection (Newark: Self-produced, 2001)

This eclectic jazz CD features Pete Giroux on trumpet and flugelhorn with his father, George, on piano. This is not the first time they have teamed up: George’s 1994 release, Friends and Standards, featured Pete on trumpet and his sister, Laurie Giroux Williams, M.M. ’89, on flute.

Harper, a Park Distinguished Chair in Communications, explores the ways technological advancements affect society, drawing on his journalism experience to illustrate how media decisions are made.

HockettShirley O. Hockett and David Bock, How to Prepare for the AP Calculus Advanced Placement Examination, 7th Edition (Hauppauge, N.Y.: Barron’s Educational Series, 2002)

This revision contains in-depth reviews, tips, and model tests to prepare for the AP calculus exam. Mathematics professor emerita Shirley Hockett’s late husband, Chas, typed the script for the first edition (1971) and every one since. This edition is dedicated to him.

Gifford Howarth ’92, Rosewood Resonance (Rochester, N.Y.: Studios at Linden Oaks, 2001)

This collection of melodies and harmonies spans the baroque period to today and features the unusual sound of classical marimba accompanied by cello, guitar, and piano.

KaeferMark Kaefer ’96, All the Time in the World (Acton, Mass.: Wellspring Sound, 2001)

Kaefer has been the drummer with the Audiants for over a year. This is the debut album of the group, which performs regularly in the Boston area.

This book explores considerations in a successful personal training business, including certifications, management, marketing, and customer service. Founder of a personal fitness company, Mastrangelo has coached Olympic athletes and published widely on fitness and health.

Dorice Teper Nelson-Damsky ’52 (as Dorice Nelson), The Gunn of Killearnan (2001) and Unlawful (2002), Douglas, Mass.: Novel Books)

The Gunn of Killearnan is a romance set in 17th-century Scotland; Nelson followed it up with Unlawful, a historical novel set in medieval Ireland during the Norse raids.

Men and Depression combines psychological theory, research, and clinical recommendations in an attempt to increase understanding of male depression. Deepening Psychotherapy looks at men’s core conflicts in their relationships with society and themselves.

Fred A. Wilcox, editor, Disciples and Dissidents: Prison Writings of the Prince of Peace Plowshares (Athol, Mass.: Haley’s, 2001)

WilcoxAssociate professor of writing Wilcox has collected essays from incarcerated members of the Prince of Peace Plowshares --- an activist civil disobedience group begun in 1980 by Daniel and Philip Berrigan and six others. The book covers topics from religion to family to the U.S. justice system.
