GUIDELINES for SUBMISSION to the IC(Point of)View 2010 ARTS and LITERARY CONTEST
Enter your best work in IC(Point of)View's third arts and literary contest. Winning entries will be published in our fall 2010/3 issue. Please read the guidelines carefully; we will reject submissions that do not follow the guidelines. This is a general-interest magazine; we will not print inflammatory, derogatory, or lewd material.
You may enter two works total in one or two of the following five categories.
VISUAL ARTS:
Fine Art: Painting or drawing only, any subject; must be reproducible in magazine format (black and white or color)
Photography: Black and white or color photography on any subject
LITERARY ARTS:
Essay: On any social, political, or personal subject, 450 words or fewer
Short-short fiction: Short stories of 450 or fewer words
Poetry: 40 lines or fewer
PRIZES
The top winner in each of the five categories will receive a cash award of $75 and publication in IC(Point of)View; the second prize for each category is $50, and the third $25. We will publish as many of the runner-up submissions as possible in the print magazine, and all of the winning entries through third place (and other entries if possible) will be published at our website.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Please read these submission guidelines carefully; if you do not follow them, your submission will not be considered!
Entries will be accepted from February 16, 2010, through June 1, 2010, ONLY. To be eligible, you must be an alumna or alumnus, current student, or current or retired employee of Ithaca College, or a member in good standing of the Friends of Ithaca College.
Winners from 2009 are ineligible to enter until 2011. Judges are ineligible to enter the contest in the genre they are judging but otherwise invited to enter their own works.
All works must be previously unpublished in print or online; no exceptions (simultaneous submissions are discouraged but will be permitted as long as you tell us when you send us your work that it is under consideration elsewhere or you intend to submit it elsewhere). Some work may be excluded because of printing limitations.
Each submitter may send in a maximum of two works in one or two genres. This year, we are not offering the option to submit any additional works for a fee.
Fine Art: Two-dimensional art (painting, drawing); must be reproducible in magazine format (black and white or color) and be publishable for a general audience (no nudes, please, not even abstract nudes, and don’t make us disqualify your work because a general audience might find it too controversial). Each artist may submit a maximum of two works total.
Send high-resolution (at least 300 dpi at 8 inches wide) digital reproductions (.jpg or .tif ONLY) of your work via e-mail to icview@ithaca.edu. We will no longer accept transparencies or slides, but you may submit your work on a CD (with .jpg or .tif files ONLY), if you prefer, to the address at the bottom of this page.
With every work submitted, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumna or alumnus) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the artist, as well as a title and description of the work (e.g., “Motorlegs,” 2010, pastel on paper, 24"x36"). Also include a separate three-sentence biographical note about you that we can use should you be a winner AND a separate three-sentence note about the piece you are submitting ("I'm drawn to subjects that show the interaction of children with the natural world. My three-year-old nephew, who lives in New York, seems to be in perpetual motion. I decided to try to capture some of his energy in this kinetic portrait, 'Jordan in Central Park.' ").
Photography: Black & white or color, any subject; must be reproducible in magazine format and be publishable for a general audience (no nudes, please, and don't make us disqualify your work because a general audience might find it too controversial. We are not and don’t want to be a funky SoHo artspace). Each artist may submit a maximum of two works total.
Submit your work electronically in high resolution (300 dpi or better at 8 inches wide) .jpg or .tif files ONLY to icview@ithaca.edu.
With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the photographer, as well as a title and description of the work (e.g., "Miami Panhandler," digital print, 2010). Also include a separate three-sentence (maximum) biographical note about you that we can use should you be a winner AND a three-sentence (maximum) note about the piece you're submitting ("I see this man every day on my way to work. I've spoken to him many times, and am impressed with his ability to find the best in people. This was my second attempt to capture his spirit, which despite the harsh circumstances of his life, still shines through").
Essay: Humorous, personal, or opinion/commentary, any subject appropriate for a general-audience periodical; 450 words maximum.
With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumna or alumnus) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the writer, as well as the title of the work. Also include a separate three-sentence (maximum) biographical note about you that we can use should you be a winner. Each writer may submit a maximum of two works total.
Short-Short Fiction: This is a real workout for creative short-fiction writers: Make us think, laugh, cry, run screaming, or sing like angels in 450 words or fewer. Remember to proofread or have an English major friend proofread your work before submitting it.
With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the writer, as well as title of the work. Also include a separate three-sentence (maximum) biographical note about you that we can use should you be a winner. Each writer may submit a maximum of two works total.
Poetry: Individual poems, 40 lines or fewer. With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the poet, as well as title of the work. Also include a separate three-sentence biographical note about you that we can use should you be a winner. Each poet may submit a maximum of two works total.
