ITHACA, NY — A presentation on “Race and Indo-Caribbean Immigration in the Poetry of David Dabydeen” will be held at Ithaca College on Monday, Nov. 16. The free public talk by Anjali Nerlekar, assistant professor of English, is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall. Nerlekar’s areas of research include South Asian literature and culture — with particular emphasis on Indian poetry and theater — Indo-Caribbean literature and postcolonial literature. She is currently working on a book project on Indian poetry. Dabydeen is a Guyanese-born author of four novels, three collections of poetry and several works of nonfiction and criticism. Only the second West Indian writer to be awarded the title of fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he was honored in 2007 with the Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) Award for his outstanding contribution to literature and the intellectual life of the Indian diaspora. The presentation is part of a yearlong discussion series on “Race and Immigration” sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity.
