DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
ANTICIPATED SHORT TERM COURSES FOR SUMMER 2009:
Culture & Society: An International
Field Experience ( Sociology 312) 3
credits; June 2009
In this course, students learn about contemporary
and historical political and economic processes
in the Dominican Republic. The course analyzes social
conflicts and draws on the sociology of race, class,
gender and sexuality, as preparation for a three-week
trip in June. The experience in the Dominican
Republic combines class instruction and field study.
Topics include race relations, human rights, colonial
and neocolonial relations, the environment and sustainability,
and the experience of immigrants to the United States.
Activities include classes, visits with social
change organizations, and excursions to locations
of contemporary and historical interest, including
museums, colonial areas and urban and rural sectors.
Students from Ithaca College and Cornell
University take part in the trip, and are encouraged
to share their experiences with college and community
groups when they return.
Applications and interviews are generally
reviewed in November for the upcoming Spring. Please
contact Alicia Swords for more information.
