Any student who may need an accommodation based on the impact or potential impact of a disability should discuss their study abroad plans with a specialist in Student Accessibility Services early on in the information gathering and application process to discuss/determine/arrange specific accommodations. 

  • While you do not need to disclose your diagnosis or information related to your disability you should consult with the Office for International Programs/Study Abroad about the need and implementation of accommodations.

Please note: Although ADA does not extend into foreign countries, Ithaca College will engage with students in the interactive process when the student is enrolled in an affiliated University program. 

  • Students should connect with SAS and the Office of International Programs prior to their departure to discuss the accessibility of the country they are interested in, their needs and potential accommodations.
    • Some accommodations may not be possible if requested too late.  
  • While Ithaca College strives to make environments accessible, please recognize that an accommodation that is reasonable in a domestic context, may not be reasonable in an international context.
    • If a student is denied an accommodation they should reach out to SAS and the Office of International Programs, to discuss alternatives and so we can discover the reason for the denial.   

The choice to use accommodations is entirely up to the student.  Please carefully consider the needs you may have that will allow you to have full access to the study abroad experience.

  • Fully research study abroad programs offered to students to make sure the program fits your needs.
  • Initiate discussion or communicate needs to Study Abroad staff, SAS, and host institution—these offices will be unaware of any questions or concerns unless they are brought to their attention.
  • Meet all deadlines.
  • Disclose disability-related condition(s) in a timely manner to Student Accessibility Services within the planning process to study abroad.
    • Recognize that planning accommodations require extra preparation time to ensure equal access.
  • Provide necessary documentation of the disability as requested by Student Accessibility Services.
  • Serve as a resource for students with disabilities that are researching accommodation options for study abroad.
  • Ensure the student's right to confidentiality regarding disability-related matters.
  • Review student's documentation and determine appropriate accommodations for study abroad.
  • Make any recommendations to the study abroad coordinator/program regarding student need.
