RENT encourages the idea of embracing life and pursuing it to the fullest, this sentiment is shared in the song, “No Day but Today.” The tragic death of the musical’s 35 year old creator Johnathan Larson, who died of an aortic aneurysm days before the musical opened on Broadway, drove home this message for audiences and casts for years to come.
Loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's 1896 opera La Bohème, RENT follows the lives of a group of bohemians in New York City’s Lower East Side. From the HIV/AIDS crisis, to drug addiction, the characters deal with societal challenges of the day, while embracing the joy they’ve found within their friendships, and love for one another. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning musical is set against the urban backdrop of the late 1980s and early 1990s New York City.
This production includes depictions of drug/alcohol addiction, sexual acts, illness/death, strobe lights, and mentions of suicide.
