The fall 2023 semester seminar consisted of four separate programs that explored the topic of diversity, activism, and media.

The first part was led by Park Scholar Eden Strachan (’21), the creator of the award-winning, independent multimedia project, Black Girls Don’t Get Love. Park Scholars watched some of Eden Strachan’s ground-breaking work empowering young Black women and then met with her for a conversation about building a career to become an independent content creator with purpose and passion.

In part two, Park Scholars watched the short films of Park Scholar Crystal Kayiza (’15), who came to Ithaca to speak with students about her career translating activist passion into award-winning documentary films; she offered insights on the importance of relationships and sincerity in establishing and growing a career as an independent filmmaker bringing diverse stories and perspectives to the screen.

In part three, students studied some of the pioneering work of Park Scholar Alex Cammy (’16), the Manager of Insights and Cultural Intelligence at Paramount and a GLAAD Media Institute Research Consultant. Alex Cammy came to Ithaca to explain the role of research in telling the authentic stories of people from diverse and often misunderstood or tokenized communities.

In part four, Park Scholar Ayshea Khan (’11), the Equity and Inclusion Officer for the City of Austin, Texas, came to Ithaca for a weekend to explore the contributions of memory, preservation, and archiving in chronicling people’s stories with an eye on diversity and representation.
