Park Scholars volunteer at Finger Lakes ReUse

Two Park Scholars volunteering

On Saturday, August 31, the current Park Scholars welcomed in the new academic year and the 32nd cohort of Ithaca College Park Scholars. As part of the day’s program, they shared an afternoon of service at Finger Lakes ReUse and saved the center the equivalent of two full-time workers, working for a full week each.

Finger Lakes ReUse strengthens the economy, builds community, and protects our environment by redirecting materials from the waste stream into productive new uses. The organization operates a community-oriented warehouse, shopping, and educational center, in which community members learn the skills of repair and reuse. (Check out the fabulous quilts in the background of the photos, made from repurposed clothing and fabric.) For more information about Finger Lakes ReUse, check out their website or contact our good friend at FLRU, Sam Queen.

A park scholar happily volunteering

Last year, four Park Scholars volunteered tirelessly at Finger Lakes ReUse, working in the warehouse and the retail centers every week; as the year progressed, they began using their media talents to create a series of promotional videos for the organization to advertise its services and to recruit donors, shoppers, and volunteers. This year, three of the incoming Park Scholars plan to join the current quartet to volunteer at Finger Lakes ReUse every weekend.
