Ithaca College-owned instruments must be returned at the end of each semester. Please be sure to return all instruments and instrument locker keys to the Instrument Repair Shop (IRS) Checkout Window (JJWCM 1209) before you leave Campus at the end of each semester.
IMPORTANT DATES
HOW TO SIGN OUT AN INSTRUMENT
- The first time you sign out an instrument, you will be asked to complete and sign an Academic Year Instrument Loan Agreement. This agreement highlights the student's responsibility for the safe care and prompt return of the instrument, including the possibility of late fees. Read the agreement carefully before signing.
- Have your Ithaca College ID ready each time you come to the Checkout Window.
- State the intended use for the instrument with the Checkout staff.
- Adhere to the Important Dates (above) concerning when your instrument is due.
Minor/Secondary Instrument Sign-Out: These instruments are used in conjunction with the secondary instrument classes. All secondary classes, with the exception of Class Brass and Class Woodwinds, allow students to sign out the instruments for the whole duration of the class. Instruments for Junior Student Teaching, Class Brass, and Class Woodwinds are to be signed out on a daily basis and brought back to the Checkout Window immediately after use.
Professional Instrument Sign-Out: Various “specialty” instruments that students often do not own are available for student use in College ensembles. Instruments must be checked out through the IRS Checkout Window, but only after we receive a written recommendation from the student’s major studio professor. Please have these memos sent via e-mail to instrepair@ithaca.edu.
OTHER POLICIES
- College-owned instruments may only be taken outside the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance with written permission from your studio professor or ensemble conductor. Please have these memos sent via e-mail to instrepair@ithaca.edu.
- Instruments are not to be left unattended in the halls or classrooms or outside the IRS Checkout Window when the window is closed.
- If any instrument is damaged or in need of repair, inform the Instrument Repair Manager or the IRS Checkout staff immediately.
- Only use instruments that have been signed out to you. There is to be no sharing within studios. If an instrument is needed by another person, inform the repair shop of the switch.
- Please leave ample amounts of time to rent an instrument before classes; the sign out window can become very busy.
SUMMER AND WINTER BREAK RENTAL POLICY
Secondary/Minor Instruments can be rented for the winter and summer breaks for a small fee and with permission. If you would like to use an Ithaca College-owned instrument during winter or summer break, please have your studio professor e-mail permission to instrepair@ithaca.edu and go to the Checkout Window to complete and sign a Winter or Summer Break Instrument Loan Agreement.
Professional Level Instruments will be rented at the discretion of the Instrument Repair Manager, with written permission from your studio professor. Please have these memos sent via e-mail to instrepair@ithaca.edu. Once approved, please go to the Checkout Window to complete and sign a Winter or Summer Break Instrument Loan Agreement. Listed below are the instruments available for rental along with the winter and summer rental fee:
- $30 ($2.00/week) -- Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Violin, Viola
- $45 ($3.00/week) -- Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone (all), Drum Pad/Stand
NOTE: Late fees will be levied pending the return of instruments past the due date. While in your possession, you are responsible for the welfare and safe return of the instruments. These policies are outlined clearly on the Rental Agreement.
