Luvelle Brown serves the Ithaca community as superintendent of the Ithaca City School District and in 2017 received the New York State Superintendent of the Year award. Along with fulfilling his responsibilities to his district, Luvelle is an active member of the local community, serving on the board of directors for the United Way of Tompkins County and Tompkins County Area Development (TCAD).
Among Luvelle’s awards and distinctions, he was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the nation's top 100 innovative superintendents and was invited to be a featured speaker at President Barack Obama’s National Superintendent Summit at the White House.
He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and was cofounder of 100 Black Men of Central Virginia, a chapter of the national organization that serves as the largest network of African American male mentors in the nation.
Luvelle’s engagement with IC included participating in an on-campus event with Ithaca’s mayor, Svante Myrick, during which the two reflected on the tragic 2017 events in Charlottesville, Virginia, and engaged in a dialogue about how the Ithaca community can move forward.
Luvelle holds four degrees from the University of Virginia, including a doctor of education (EdD), and is currently an adjunct faculty member at the State University of New York College at Cortland and St. John Fisher College.
Luvelle lives in Ithaca with his children, Landyn and Aiden.
