Participating in FLEFF was an inspiring, mind-blowing experience on many levels. When I was invited to participate in the 2019 DISRUPTIONS theme, I was thrown into multiple spaces within the structure of the festival where disruptions occurred.
Many of my views of the world were altered and my perspectives were broadened while attending discussions, lectures, and screenings. This was clearly true for the other participants as well.
The presenters were uniformly brilliant.
One of the most significant experiences for me was meeting Philip Mallory Jones, a great artist of whom I had been completely unaware. At FLEFF I had an opportunity to not only experience his incredible work, but also exchange ideas with him directly on several occasions. The festival’s formal and informal settings made this type of connection possible.
Even the talks I gave produced insights for me (and hopefully for the audience). For example, Patty Zimmerman had invited me to present a shot-by-shot analysis of my own early film DARK SUN SQUEEZE (2003). This exercise made me realize the intentions behind many of the shots.
