An A-maize-ing Experience

Each year, the Moore Family Farm in Groton, New York, cuts a unique five-acre maze into one of their cornfields for their annual fall festival. In fall 2023, their creation paid tribute to the football rivalry between the State University of New York at Cortland and Ithaca College—and the iconic Cortaca Jug. The maze was in the shape of Ithaca and SUNY Cortland football helmets with the jug between them.

Bomber pride is strong on the Moore farm. Kay Moore ’68 was a math major at IC and helped start the farm, and several other family members and workers at the farm also have Ithaca College connections.

Continuing the tradition of competition, the Moore family also set up a scoreboard near the maze. They kept track of the visitors who came showing off their school’s colors—Bomber blue or Red Dragon red—and added them to the scoreboard.

Ithaca College’s head football coach, Michael Toerper, brought his family for a visit to the farm. “It’s a great reminder of the community support we have,” Toerper said. “I loved getting a chance to check it out in person. It’s a fantastic example of Bombers supporting Bombers.”

IC student Elle Schumacher ’26 also tackled the maze. “With a coded map in hand, I marched bravely into the sea of stalks—immediately into a dead end,” said Schumacher. “But the Moore family had ensured that even those who got lost during their journey would have an enjoyable time. Several wrong turns directed me to signposts that included facts about the history of Cortaca. It was wonderful seeing the sense of community that the Cortaca Jug inspired, and it was a reminder that it was a great day to be a Bomber,” she added.
