Hear their insights in an engaging live format meant to provide expert commentary.
Dr. Lauren Britton is Assistant Professor of Emerging Media at Ithaca College. She specializes in understanding the design and media practices of groups operating outside of traditional design and media environments and aims to uncover the motivations and implications of these practices. Her research interests span computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), and social computing/social media, where her general research agenda involves understanding how people both hack and redesign technologies to create alternative futures. To date, her research has focused on feminist media practices, critical making and design, critical infrastructuring, critical making and design, and ICT-enabled resilience making.
Dr. Ulises A. Mejias, ’94, MS’99 is Associate Professor and Director of the Institute for Global Engagement at the State University of New York, College at Oswego. He researches critical data studies, philosophy and sociology of technology, and political economy of digital media. He is author of Off the Network: Disrupting the Digital World (2013), and has published extensively in international journals and in Al Jazeera, Afterimage, Datactive, Progressive Librarian and more. His most recent book is The Costs of Connection: How Data is Colonizing Human Life and Appropriating it for Capitalism (with Nick Couldry, 2019). More info at ulisesmejias.com.
Dr. Doug Turnbull is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Ithaca College. His research focuses on music information retrieval, computer audition, machine learning, and human computation. His research passion is using recommender systems to promote music by talented local artists. He is currently working on Localify.org which explores using music event recommendations and playlist generation on Spotify to support local music communities. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation and being developed by a large team of undergraduate students at Ithaca College.
