Being heard in a masked classroom

By Colette Matisco, January 10, 2021

Monday, January 11
10:30am – 12:00pm

In-person plus hybrid lecturing presents a unique challenge for faculty returning to the classroom and for their students. This workshop, taught by long-time IC voice faculty member Carol McAmis, offers an opportunity to learn effective strategies for speaking with greater clarity and less vocal fatigue while wearing a mask. Participants will learn some basic skills for warming up the voice, articulating clearly, and “speaking past the mask.” The workshop is highly experiential as we will be trying out the exercises by actually speaking, both with and without a mask. Not to worry, though. Everyone will be on mute so your vocal experiments will be completely private. There will be opportunity for a Q & A at the end of the workshop. In addition, Professor McAmis will be sharing tips from many IC alums who have been teaching in person and hybrid in the public schools this year. A handout with additional ideas and resources will be provided for all who attend. The workshop will be recorded for later viewing if you can’t attend in person.
