Ithaca debater invited to public debate

By Scott Thomson, January 26, 2021

This Monday evening Michael Deviney ('21, Business Administration - Corporate Finance and first year member of the Speech and Debate Team) took on Marshall Evans President of the Capital University Debate Team in a debate in front of Capital University students.

Michael presented a case advocating a pathway to citizenship for people living in the United States without documentation.  He emphasized the suffering and fear felt by the children of parents who are vulnerable to detention and deportation. Marshall's strategy was to point to recent reforms proposed by the Biden Administration as a reason to not focus on immigration and instead suggested that dealing with climate change was more important.  After the debate audience members were encouraged to join the Capital team.

Ithaca College's Speech and Debate participated in several events during the Fall winning several speaker awards.  Several more tournaments are planned for this Spring. Interested Ithaca College students should contact Scott Thomson (pthomson@ithaca.edu).
