Important security update for iPhones and iPads

By Jason Youngers, January 29, 2021

Due to a security vulnerability in iOS, please update all IC and personally-owned iPhones and iPads to iOS version 14.4.

An important security update is available for Apple iPhone and iPad devices, which fixes a vulnerability that allows iOS devices to be compromised by visiting web pages carrying malicious content. This update is mandatory for continued access to IC information systems, including email. Even if you’re not planning on accessing IC systems from your iOS device, you should run the update as soon as possible to protect your personal information. Older devices that are no longer supported by their manufacturers and are no longer provided with security updates should be considered insecure and used accordingly.

Apple automatically makes this update available to you through your Settings app – you should never click on a link in email asking you to install software or upgrade. Please take the following steps to update your device to version 14.4:

  1. Plug your device into power or ensure that it has at least 50% battery remaining.
  2. In Settings choose General, and choose Software Update.
