AAUP Petition re: APPIC Recommendations

The Ithaca College chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is circulating a petition regarding the APPIC recommendations.

AAUP contends that the process that produced these recommendations contravenes principles of shared governance and academic freedom, as well as a key AAUP principle regarding the elimination of faculty positions in response to moments of financial crisis.  We urge the Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees to reject the recommendations; to return to the APP process with a reconstituted committee that is open to faculty members; to extend the timeline for its work so that no colleagues will find themselves without employment at the height of a pandemic; and to provide a document that contains a fully detailed and accessible picture of the College’s current finances.  We encourage you to read and sign the petition, if you are in agreement with its claims.

The AAUP chapter on campus restarted very recently (just last month, in fact), and it has an active and growing membership.  We are committed to building a culture of genuinely inclusive, genuinely shared governance at Ithaca College, in which faculty not only actively provide feedback to College-wide proposals but participate in processes of decision-making and implementation.  We will advocate for faculty concerns, and will partner with staff, students, and alumni.  In order for our work to be as effective as possible, we need (and our work needs) to be as representative of the full faculty as possible, which means that we want our membership to be as large and as comprehensive as possible.  We encourage and welcome your participation.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Dan Breen, in the English Dept., at dbreen@ithaca.edu.
