The fourth F2F salon features an interview with Dr. Jennifer Spitzer, Associate Professor of English at Ithaca College. Dr. Patricia Zimmermann, Professor of Screen Studies, conducts the interview.
Dr. Spitzer specializes in twentieth-century Anglo-American literature. Her research interests include literary modernism, psychoanalysis, the medical humanities, gender and sexuality, and twentieth-century theories of mind. She completed her Ph.D. in 2012 at New York University and has taught at Harvard University as a lecturer in History and Literature.
Her articles have appeared in Modernism/modernity, Journal of Modern Literature, Studies in the Novel, and Los Angeles Review of Books Avidly, among other venues. She is currently preparing a special issue on the literary “detail” with Shirley Lau Wong for Modern Language Quarterly (forthcoming, 2021). A chapter on Rebecca West and spiritualism is forthcoming in The Edinburgh Companion to Modernism, Myth, and Religion. She is currently working on a book entitled Secret Sharers: The Intimate Rivalries of Modernism and Psychoanalysis.
Dr. Patricia Zimmermann is Professor of Screen Studies and Codirector of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival. Her most recent books include The Flaherty: Decades in the Cause of Independent Cinema (2017); Open Space New Media Documentary: A Toolkit for Theory and Practice (2018); States of Emergency: Media, Place, Politics (2019); Flash Flaherty: Tales from a Film Seminar (2021) among many others.
Employing the master class model, these engaging participatory salons feature senior faculty members interviewing early and mid-career WGST-affiliated faculty members about their research and their journeys to becoming scholars. Each semester will feature salons with different faculty interviewers and interviewees.
The purpose of the salons is to showcase our feminist, anti-racist, decolonialist faculty on the Ithaca College campus, with a focus on their scholarship. We are inviting students to enter into the discipline of Women's and Gender Studies by listening to the faculty discussing their work and current debates and controversies in their disciplines.
The 75-minute salons will employ a master class model of guided conversation and then engagement with questions from attendees. They will wrap up with takeaways from participants both live and in the chat.
During the pandemic, “F2F” has emerged as an acronym for face-to-face or embodied instruction or meetings. Our salons will expand “F2F” to unfold other meanings and possibilities, such as Feminist to Feminist, Field to Field, Festival to Festival, Friend to Friend.
