Professor Kasia Bartoszynska publishes essay on Orhan Pamuk

By Chris Holmes, March 4, 2021

Assistant Professor of English, Kasia Bartoszynska has published an online essay on the Turkish nobel prize winner Orham Pamuk titled, "Cold War World Literature: Orhan Pamuk's White Castle."

The essay is included in a series of invited responses to Gloria Fisk's Orhan Pamuk and The Good of World Literature (Columbia University Press). Kasia points out the lacuna in Fisk's reading of Pamuk, a novel that helps further Fisk's point about translatability. Kasia describes how White Castle "encodes meanings for Turkish readers that non-Turkish audiences would almost certainly miss through a willful misrepresentation of specific events in contemporary Turkish history." Fisk, in her reply to Bartoszynska's essay calls her reading "elegant." The essay can be found here: https://syndicate.network/symposia/literature/orhan-pamuk-and-the-good-of-world-literature/
