Faculty Advisors: New Tools and Resources on the Faculty Hub!

By Elizabeth Bleicher, March 21, 2021

As we head into preparation for fall registration, the Retention and Engagement Strategy Team (REST) has new resources to share. In addition to the Online Advising Toolkit on the Faculty Hub, we have added two new tools, and three advising events to share with students.  Events are open to all students in all majors, but especially useful for first- and second-year students.

 New Tools:

“Withdrawing from a Course: Should I Stay or Should I Go?” - This document helps students and advisors consider the factors that go into making an informed decision about whether taking a W is the best strategy for a given situation.

“How and Why to Visit a Professor’s Office Hours” - These tips, derived from the Ithaca Summer Seminar “College: Learning to Learn,” describe the purpose and benefits of participating in office hours, and strategies for getting the most out the time.

Advising and Academic Success Events to Share with your Advisees

Students register for all these opportunities in Engage

“Roadtrip to Registration” - Join us for a registration prep session co-sponsored by the Exploratory Program and the First-Gen Residential Learning Community. Bring your questions and confusions and learn tips and strategies to create a sane, sustainable schedule for the fall semester.

April 6, 5-7 p.m.

"Map Your Path to Success" - Exploratory Peer Leaders will help you learn how to create a semester-by-semester plan to graduate on time. This session includes:

•             downloadable instructions and template

•             demonstrations of how they work

•             samples of completed four-year maps: courses completed and a timeline for taking remaining courses, and

 •             assistance in creating your own map.

Students who have learned how to map report feeling calmer and more in control of their future since they have a flexible structure and a plan for getting where they want to go. Maps are useful to share with your advisor and to help you make informed choices during fall registration.

Co-sponsored by the Exploratory Program and the Retention and Engagement Strategy Team (REST).

Wednesday, March 31, 7-8 p.m.

Thursday, April 8, 12:10-1 p.m.
