"A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant\'s Son"- A "FulbrightReads" Event!

By Kathleen Mulligan, April 5, 2021

The Central NY Chapter of the Fulbright Association is very proud to announce our newest project—"Fulbright Reads: A Fulbright Association Book Club” Many of us belong to book clubs. Here’s a chance to be in a book club with people from all over the world. The pandemic confronts us with many challenges –but one silver lining is the reminder that we can connect with one another virtually across time zones.

Our next book: A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant's Son by Sergio Troncoso.

“(A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant's Son is) a masterwork bursting with immigrant intimacies, electrifying truths and hard-earned tenderness... An extraordinary performance.” -Junot Díaz, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Our next virtual book club selection is Sergio Troncoso’s A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son-- a collection of short stories exploring the immigrant experience. We hope that many of our Fulbright friends around the world will join us “in the room” on Wednesday, April 21 from 7:30-9:00 EST for a conversation with the author about this beautiful and thought-provoking book.

“How does a Mexican-American, the son of poor immigrants, leave his border home and move to the heart of gringo America? How does he adapt to the worlds of wealth, elite universities, the rush and power of New York City? How does he make peace with a stern old-fashioned father who has only known hard field labor his whole life? With echoes of Dreiser’s American Tragedy and Fitzgerald’s Gatsby, Troncoso tells his luminous stories through the lens of an exile adrift in the 21st century, his characters suffering from the loss of culture and language, the loss of roots and home as they adapt to the glittering promises of new worlds which ultimately seem so empty.”
