CLOSING SOON!: A Closer Look: at the Handwerker Gallery throughApril 9

By Mara Baldwin, April 7, 2021

Our current exhibitions will close this Friday! During Spring 2021 exhibitions are only open to the Ithaca College campus community (students, staff, and faculty). A virtual gallery is available through a link on the gallery website.

A CLOSER LOOK

February 24-April 9, 2021

works by Maya Aperans, Sister Mary Corita, Eugène Delacroix, Ralph Gibson, William Hogarth, Käthe Kollwitz, Bruce McCombs, Christian Midjo, Thom O’Connor, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Odilon Redon, Roger Shimomura, Carol Summers

Between 1963 and 1972 Ithaca College Museum of Art Director Gretel Leed was charged by Dorothy Hoyt Dillingham to amass a vast collection of works from scratch for a fledgling college permanent collection. While much of this collection would later be auctioned off to secure funds for the construction of Ithaca College's new South Hill campus, the bulk of today’s college collection is still comprised of works acquired through these Amazonian efforts. While this collection supports independent research and class curricula from the Department of Art History, much of the collection is under-researched and deserves closer attention. A Closer Look makes space for this speculation, pulling interesting works from the permanent collection that have special relevance within the context of the events and turmoil of this past (and ongoing) difficult year.
