Updating your Mac OS to the next release (Big Sur) is encouraged

By Dusan Ducic, June 16, 2021

MacOS Big Sur is the next major iteration of Apple’s operating system for 2020-2021. Starting today, you are encouraged to upgrade your Ithaca College Mac computer to macOS Big Sur at your earliest convenience.

Big Sur features a revamped User Interface, refreshed App Icons and a redesigned Notification Center with grouped notifications. Big Sur brings optimized battery charging to all macs, faster Spotlight search and numerous updates to Apple’s native apps.

A full overview of macOS Big Sur is available on Apple’s website: https://www.apple.com/macos/big-sur/

Information Technology has been testing macOS Big Sur for the past 6 months and we are confident that it’s ready for all Campus Community Mac users to enjoy.

  •  Big Sur is now the default operating system offered by Endpoint Systems for newly replaced or refreshed Macs.
  • The upgrade is self-service. Big Sur will not become a required upgrade until the end of summer 2021.
  • If you have macOS Catalina 10.15 installed, you do not need to upgrade immediately. However, it helps the campus community if you take the initiative and upgrade now. It will be one less thing to worry about going into the fall 2021 semester.
  • All Ithaca College Macs will eventually need to upgrade since Apple and major app developers like Microsoft drop support for older operating systems on a yearly basis. This fall, macOS Mojave will drop out of patch support by Apple, Microsoft and other vendors.

Thank you for upgrading your Mac!
