Be Safe While Enjoying the Beauty of our Ithaca Gorges

The gorges that run through Ithaca are beautiful and we hope you have an opportunity to enjoy them during the beautiful weather this fall. Please be safe as the gorges can also be dangerous. Many people have been injured or killed through the misuse of the gorges and failure to pay attention to posted warning signs. Pay attention to the weather in our local area. Please stay out of the streams in the days following a rain event. Water volumes build over many miles creating strong currents that can unexpectedly sweep you off your feet. Please also follow these gorge safety guidelines.

  • Remain on marked trails as walking in restricted areas creates an imminent risk of falling from cliffs or being hit by falling rocks.
  • Swimming is prohibited as streams in the gorges have dangerous, hidden currents and people have drowned in them.
  • Use of alcohol or other substances increases all of the dangers outlined in this message.
  • Do not hike on unlighted trails after dark—cliff edges are closer than they look, and it is easy to become disoriented in the dark.
  • Do not use trails that are closed in the winter.
