Francesco Targhetta (b. 1980) is an Italian poet and novelist. Among his publications are a poetry collection (Fiaschi, ExCogita, 2009, republished in expanded form in 2020) and a novel in verse (Perciò veniamo bene nelle fotografie, Isbn, 2012, republished by Mondadori in 2019). His booklet, Le cose sono due (Valigie Rosse, 2014), was awarded the Delfini Prize and the Ciampi Prize. His novel Le vite potenziali (Mondadori, 2018) won the Berto Prize and the Selezione Campiello Prize.
In Francesco Targhetta’s world, the Italy of picturesque postcards is contorted in an ugly grimace as it chokes under the pressure of rampant construction. The profound melancholy stirred by the awareness of an unstoppable downward spiral of environmental self-destruction goes well beyond geographical borders, yet Targhetta’s poems are also deeply rooted in their specific territory, northeast Italy, a model of industrial efficiency and personal alienation, as evident particularly in "La morte seconda" (The Second Death").
