Information Technology is pleased to report that live computer-generated transcription services from Zoom will now be available by default for Ithaca College Zoom accounts, effective Wednesday, August 25th. The live transcription service has been available for individuals to manually enable since October of 2020.
How will this impact me?
Effective Wednesday, August 25th, the next time you log into the Zoom client from a desktop or mobile device, the text under the CC button will change from Closed Caption to Live Transcript, and the Zoom meeting host will have the ability to Enable Auto-Transcription for meetings and webinars as desired.
If the host enables this feature, participants can view computer-generated transcription services when participating in a meeting or webinar.
How does it work?
When in a meeting or webinar, the host can enable automatic transcription services by clicking the Live transcript (CC) button and selecting Enable Auto-Transcription. When a host has enabled this feature, participants will be notified that this service is available and can manage their view of the automatic transcription by clicking the Live transcript (CC) button and selecting Show Subtitle or View Full Transcript (to view the transcript in the side panel of the meeting). Note that subtitles can be clicked and dragged to move their position in the meeting window.

Accommodations
Enabling this live transcription service will provide more inclusive options for subtitles and full transcript services for our campus community. However, as Zoom’s live transcription service is created by automatic speech recognition software (i.e., they are not human-generated), it does not provide transcription services that are accurate enough to meet the needs of those who require live transcription as an accommodation. Human-created captions are the only method that meets accommodation standards. To learn more about live captioning and transcription, please visit Student Accessibility Services websites, Captioning 101, and Live Captioning/Transcription.
Requests for accommodations for human-created captioning services should be directed to the event organizer/sponsor. Meeting and event organizers are responsible for ensuring that accommodation language is included in the advertising for their meeting or event. For example, “Automatic computer-generated captions will be available for this event. Individuals who would like to request additional accessibility accommodations should contact youremail@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests be made as soon as possible to ensure they can be met.”
