A Welcoming Gathering to Launch the New Academic Year

By Wendy Hankle, August 26, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

As has been the practice with our community for many years, the Office of the President is hosting an all-college event to mark the start of the new academic year. This year’s gathering will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 31, during the common hour, from 12:10 – 1:05 p.m. in Emerson Suites.

This is an event for the entire community—faculty, staff, and students are welcome. Due to the reality of COVID, in-person seating will be limited to 300 individuals and the event will be livestreamed.

We have much to be grateful for and excited about as we begin this academic year fully in person. Our time on Tuesday will be focused on reconnecting us as colleagues and people, and recentering ourselves around our purpose as an institution of higher education.

Our agenda includes:

  • Welcoming remarks by the president
  • A centering moment
  • An overview of our strategic priorities for the year
  • Welcoming remarks by leaders of Faculty Council, Staff Council, and the Student Governance Council
  • Refreshments and connection

In October, we will convene once more as a whole community for a more formal meeting, where I and the members of the senior leadership team will provide updates from each of our areas in advance of the fall Board of Trustees meetings.

I look forward to seeing you next week, and I wish you a wonderful beginning to your academic year.

Take good care,

La Jerne Terry Cornish
Provost and Executive Vice President
