Canvas Tips for Success

By Jenna Linskens, August 29, 2021

Now that Canvas has officially launched as Ithaca College’s learning management system (LMS), throughout the semester the Implementation Team will be providing tips to success for faculty, students, and staff. Here are three quick tips to help users navigate a few common errors.

Have you had trouble logging into Canvas?

Make sure you are following these steps to quickly log in to the new LMS.

  1. Click on the tile in apps.ithaca.edu or go to canvas.ithaca.edu
  2. In the pop-up box, enter your full IC email address (example: username@ithaca.edu) and password.
  3. Authenticate through Duo, if prompted
  4. If you are on a shared computer, for privacy and security purposes we recommend clicking on “no” when prompted to stay signed in.

If you continue to have trouble logging into Canvas, please contact the IT Service Desk (servicedesk@ithaca.edu), by phone 607-274-1000, or IT Chat ithaca.edu/itchat

Are your students saying they cannot see specific Pages or Modules?

Check that you have published the Page, the Module where the Page is located, and then the entire course. Look for the green checkmarks. If a Module is not published, the students will not see the Pages or content in that Module.

Important: If you edited any Sample Pages in the unpublished Module, “Blueprint Information for Instructors” they won’t be visible to students. To remedy:

  1. Go to Modules and remove the page from the unpublished module. The page will not be deleted, only removed from the module.
  2. Go to Pages and find the specific sample Page. It should indicate that you edited the page and when you last modified it.
  3. Rename the page if you haven’t already done so.
  4. Publish the page.
  5. Set as the Front (home) page, if desired.

You can watch this short video in the Canvas @ IC channel found on media.ithaca.edu for a quick overview of how to change a page from unpublished mode to make it visible for students.

Still not sure where to ask for help?

The Implementation Team has put together a simple flow chart to guide users through resources to get answers to your Canvas questions.

  • Faculty can view the flow chart in the Canvas Resources @ IC course found in the Help menu of Canvas
  • Students can view the flow chart in the Canvas Student Resources @ IC course found in the Help menu of Canvas

For more tips follow IT@IC on InstagramTwitter, or Facebook. For more detailed information on each tip, visit the courses Canvas Resources @ IC (for faculty) or Canvas Student Resources @ IC (for students). The links to these courses can also be found in the Help menu of Canvas.
