The Behind the Screens series launches on Tuesday with conversations that unpack cinema

Lucius Barre, international film publicist, and Dr. Patricia Zimmermann will do a one-hour conversation Tuesday Sept 21 at 7 Eastern time on Zoom discussing film festivals, international art cinema, the impact of the pandemic, the importance of speaking languages other than English, and more.

This session offers the student a behind the scenes and behind the screens view of the international film industry.  Barre will also share stories about his early career path and how he entered this role in the festival world.

Lucius Barre is the inaugural speaker for the Behind the Screens series

Lucius Barre specializes in promoting international distribution for films from many cultures. Barre represented the first crossover films of Pedro Almódovar, Shinji Aoyama, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Atom Egoyan, Zacharias Kunuk, Jean-Claude Lauzon, Johnnie To, and Tom Tykwer; and has collaborated with well- established filmmakers such as Lee Chang-dong, Errol Morris, Alain Resnais, Carlos Saura, Volker Schlöndorff and Hiroshi Teshigahara.

Barre has promoted film programs for the national film agencies of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Barre has served as the long-time protocol officer at the Rotterdam Festival, and has consulted with festivals at Abu Dhabi, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Karlovy Vary, New York, Locarno, and San Francisco. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a former Trustee of the Flaherty International Film Seminars.

The Behind the Screens series features interactive conversations with industry professionals, practitioners, artists, and cutting edge scholars to probe the behind the scenes of screen cultures across myriad forms, practices, topics, and debates.

Behind the Screens is coprogrammed by Dr. Rachel Schaff and Dr. Patricia Zimmermann, Screen Studies, in colloboration with the BA in Screen Cultures,  World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival.  Ari Kissiloff. Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication, serves as producer.
