Dr. Costello currently teaches courses addressing the management of orthopedic conditions, psychosocial aspects of patient care, and clinical research. Prior to joining the faculty at Ithaca College, he was the founding director/coordinator of the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program and Spine Fellowship Program at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY, where he continues to mentor and teach courses related to clinical reasoning, management of spinal condition, clinical application of pain sciences, and manual therapy. When asked, “If you could get a message out to all physical therapy or health professional students with regards to any topic, what would it be and why?”, Dr. Costello responded with the following:
Listen to and believe your patients. This message is so important in the chronic pain realm, where so many of our patients have not been believed. While I was taking courses at St. Augustine, I remember reading a quote from William Osler (founding professor of John Hopkins) which said, “Listen to your patient; he is telling you the diagnosis.” This message is clearer now than it ever used to be. Listen to their story. When I reflect on the cases where I was unsuccessful with the patient, it often involved not fully listening to them, even if my treatments were well intended and I employed evidence-based concepts. I’ll say, though, it's not just listening; it's the interaction and making sure the back and forth is balanced and collaborative.
