Dear Participant,

You are invited to participate in a research study exploring the psychological and financial impact of student evaluation of teaching (SET) in higher education. Part of our efforts to create equitable, inclusive, and diverse institutions of higher education is to investigate the systems of assessment that have historically privileged white heteronormative male instructors and disadvantaged, marginalized, and/or harmed instructors based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, age, etc.

We aim to understand the psychological and financial implications of student evaluation of teaching, which has disproportionately biased female instructors and instructors of color. The anonymous survey asks 17 questions about your personal experiences regarding student biases in SET. On the second page of the survey, there are 8 demographic questions. If you decide to participate, the online survey should take about 7-10 minutes to complete.

You are eligible to participate in this research study if you are at least 18 years of age and have received student evaluation of teaching in your professional role as a graduate student instructor or faculty member (part-time, full-time contingent, full-time secure, tenure-track, tenured, retired).

This survey is anonymous and your participation is voluntary. There is no penalty if you decide not to participate. If you begin the survey and decide you want to stop, simply exit your internet browser. Moreover, if you agree to complete the survey, you can skip any questions.  There are no known risks for your participation in this research. There are no direct benefits to you if you choose to take the survey. The main benefit of this study is to the research community that wants to learn more about inequity in higher education.

The results of this project will be used for potential publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, international conferences, and further research. Through your participation, we aim to understand the invisible emotional and physical labor of teaching, as well as the financial cost of working within an inequitable system of assessment.

This project has been approved by Ithaca College’s Institutional Review Board. If you have any questions or concerns about completing the survey, being in this study, or receiving a summary of my findings, you may contact Dr. Mary Lourdes Silva, Associate Professor of Writing, at msilva@ithaca.edu.
