Training in Mental Health First Aid

By Colette Matisco, December 12, 2021

Would you like to learn more about how to respond in a mental health crisis and be a bridge between crisis and professional help? Do you want to know more about how to recognize the signs of a mental health crisis in students or other adults in your life, and how to help them find resources? Sign up for this free 8-hour course intended for Ithaca College faculty, taught by an Ithaca College faculty member. Expect to spend two hours on independent virtual pre-work, and six hours together over Zoom (or in later sessions, maybe in-person).

Mental Health First Aid is the initial help offered to a person developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a mental health crisis (i.e. suicidal behavior; non-suicidal self-injury; panic attacks; traumatic events; depression or anxiety; acute psychosis; substance use disorders; overdose or withdrawal). The first aid is given until appropriate treatment and support are received or until the crisis resolves. Participants in the workshop will learn:

  • risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance use problems
  • information on recognizing depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and substance use
  • a 5-step first-aid action plan to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or is currently in crisis
  • available evidence-based professional, peer and self-help resources for mental health

This course is co-sponsored by CAPS, the Provost’s Office, and the Center for Faculty Excellence.
