Today, Friday, January 22 from 3 - 3:30 pm, members of the Ithaca-area community will come together at the Bernie Milton Pavilion in the Ithaca Commons, in a unified statement of solidarity with the Jewish community, which was targeted in a hostage-taking incident that occurred during Shabbat worship in Colleyville, TX last Saturday (Jan 16).
Though the situation was thankfully resolved without physical harm to any of the hostages, the event which could easily have evolved into a much bigger tragedy called attention to the potentially lethal consequences of antisemitic speech or actions that target Jewish people. The gathering this Friday will serve as a unified, tangible statement that “Hate Has No Home Here” in Central New York. We stand together with the Jewish community in their hour of pain and vulnerability. For those of any faith tradition – and those with no religious affiliation at all – an assault on a community gathered in a house of worship for peaceful prayer is a betrayal of our basic human values. Please join us!
