New Integrations with Canvas – Office 365/OneDrive

Information Technology is pleased to announce new and improved Office 365 and OneDrive integrations within Canvas!

Microsoft OneDrive

Microsoft OneDrive is Ithaca College’s online file storage service, comparable to Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive, that allows you to upload, backup, create, view, edit, and share files. All Ithaca College faculty, students, and staff have access to 1 TB of storage in their Microsoft OneDrive account, accessible through apps.ithaca.edu.

There are four primary methods to leverage the Canvas and OneDrive integration for instructors, including:

  1. View and Edit OneDrive Files in Course Navigation: Files stored in OneDrive can be viewed and edited through the Microsoft OneDrive link in the Course Navigation.
  2. Access OneDrive Files within the Rich Content Editor: You can embed or link a copy of a OneDrive document anywhere you can use the Rich Content Editor, or upload files from OneDrive into your Canvas course anywhere you can use the Rich Content Editor.
  3. Create Cloud Assignments from OneDrive: You can create an online assignment that embeds a Word, PowerPoint, or Excel file directly from your OneDrive, and use SpeedGrader to grade each student’s unique copy of the assignment.
  4. Create Collaborations from OneDrive: You can create collaborations with an existing Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file so learners can work together on shared documents in real-time. This is great for group projects!

Students can leverage the OneDrive integration in similar ways by viewing their OneDrive files in Course Navigation, submitting cloud assignments, uploading OneDrive files, and participating in Collaborations.

Microsoft Teams & Meetings

Microsoft Teams is also available as an integration in Canvas and features the ability for instructors and students to create or join classroom teams and to create or join secure, online meetings in Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams can complement a Canvas Course by providing additional asynchronous opportunities for document collaboration, file sharing, 1-1 or large group discussions, focused project work, and more.

Microsoft Teams is a desktop, mobile, and web-based communication and collaboration platform for Office 365 that brings everything together into a shared workspace where you can meet and share files with 25 TB of storage space. Teams offers group chat, online meeting and web conferencing, audio and video calling, collaboration with built-in Office 365 applications, OneDrive access, and more.
