Reminder to Move Cars Parked on Ithaca Streets Scheduled for Cleaning

By David Maley, March 31, 2022

The City of Ithaca Department of Public Works will begin its annual spring street cleaning operations on Monday, April 4, with some streets on South Hill early on the schedule. Residents who park their car on the street should watch for signs and check on their car daily from April 4 through May 6 in order to avoid a costly ticket and towing. If you will be away during this time, you should consider making alternative parking arrangements for your vehicle.

Each street to be cleaned will be posted with a “No Parking Zone” sign 24 hours in advance of the cleaning. The posted signs are intended for the entire block, so please do not think you are safe by parking in between them. All vehicles that remain on the street after the posted time will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. The base fee for a tow in the City of Ithaca is $200 and the daily storage fee after the first 24 hours is $50 per day.

The city will utilize Tompkins SIREN to notify residents who are subscribed to the “Street Cleaning” notification list of the streets to be cleaned each day. Reminders will also be posted on the city’s website and social media accounts.

Tompkins SIREN has replaced Swift 911 as the free local mass notification system. Individuals who were previously signed up for Swift 911 will be automatically enrolled in the new system; however, they are encouraged to create a profile in the new platform. Residents of Tompkins County who were not previously signed up for Swift 911 should sign up for Tompkins SIREN at www.tompkinscountyny.gov/siren.

Questions or concerns about the street cleaning program can be directed to the Streets and Facilities Office at 607-272-1718.
