Grades are due for any term (or block) 5 business days from the last final at 5:00pm ET.
During the academic year the ACC was asked to review the inconsistency in the length of time grades are due at the end of the fall and spring terms. The ACC is also including block grading in the practice.
Current practice: fall grades are due on December 30. Spring grades are due the Wednesday after finals week. This allows 10-15 days for grades to be due in fall and 3-4 days in spring.
The ACC recommends that Grades be due for any term (or block) 5 business days from the last final at 5:00pm ET.
Rationale, student success and business process changes to support this recommendation:
-
The ACC reviewed other institutions’ grading policies and found grades being due 5 business days from the last final exam to be typical in higher education.
-
Faculty serving on ACC discussed whether 5 business days is a reasonable grading deadline from administration of the last final.
-
The ACC has made two prior adjustments to the fall calendar, which helps ensure a 5-business day deadline will not occur during the Winter break campus closure:
- Fall term begins on a Monday instead of a Wednesday (adding 2 days to the calendar allowing IC to end the term earlier)
- Final exam week has been reduced to 4 days (adding 1 day to the calendar allowing IC to end the term earlier)
-
In the Spring Calendar, this change will allow extra days for grading and will extend the deadline beyond our current practice for spring semesters. The same is true for Block 1 and Block 2 classes.
-
Student Success. This will allow Office of the Registrar to process grading and to calculate GPAs, giving students information they need for academic decision making during the Winter Break.
-
This change allows the fall term to be fully completed before we begin the Winter Term.
