The Collado Award is presented to an Ithaca College faculty member who exemplifies President Emerita Collado’s vision of excellence in education, as demonstrated through an inclusive approach to educational practices of teaching, research, and/or leadership.
In recognition of her dedication and work towards equity, inclusion, and antiracism, this year’s award is given to Dr. Kelley Sullivan, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy. As her nominators state, Dr. Sullivan has led her department’s inclusion and anti-racism efforts including a student-faculty team drafting the department anti-racism action plan that includes forty distinct actions focused on identifying and addressing bias, privilege, and inclusion in physics and astronomy. She has overhauled the department faculty search procedures, in accordance with IC recommendations and national efforts, to increase faculty hiring from groups underserved and underrepresented in physics and astronomy. She has led a team representing Ithaca College in the American Institute of Physics TEAM-UP program aimed at increasing enrollment, retention, and success of black undergraduate physics majors. She is principal investigator on a successful National Science Foundation grant ($650,000) that enables our S-STEM program to support high-performing, low-income students majoring in STEM disciplines. And she has been selected in a national search by the American Physical Society as one of six EDI Fellows.
The President Shirley M. Collado Faculty Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Ithaca College Community is intended to support the professional development of the chosen faculty member to further enhance their capacity for equitable and inclusive leadership in all relevant academic and community areas. This $5000 award is made possible by a generous gift from Gloria Hobbs, Honorary Alumna & Trustee of Ithaca College.
Our sincere congratulations to the 2022 Collado Award recipient, Dr. Kelley Sullivan.
