Sensory overload on campus? We’ve got you.

By Brittany Watros, April 23, 2022

The JED Campus Initiative is excited to offer a temporary Sensory Space, in Campus Center, during Stop and Breathe Week. A sensory room is a great way to improve wellness by using gentle, positive multi-sensory stimulation. This type of environment helps with stress reduction, mindfulness, and an overall feeling of calm. It allows us to take a break band let the mind and body de-stress, re-focus, and re-group. This is very beneficial, even if it is just for a few minutes in between classes or meetings.

Many members of our campus community experience sensory challenges often associated with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and PTSD. A room, such as this quiet space, will give neurodivergent students a place to step away from sensory overload. The hope is that offering a space like this, during one of the most stressful times on campus, will give everyone that moment they need to continue their day feeling more calm and ready to take on the week.
