In 2006, President Peggy Williams signed the Talloires Declaration, committing to incorporate sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations, and outreach at Ithaca College. Today IC is co-signatory with hundreds of other institutes of higher education in 61 countries.
In 2009-2010, the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences (ENVS) was founded to lead the work prescribed in the Talloires Declaration. Now, despite seismic institutional changes, a burgeoning climate emergency, runaway environmental degradation, and a widening gulf between the ideal of environmental justice and the lived reality of many of the world's people, ENVS remains committed to this work.
We are still here, eager to partner in solidarity with everyone interested in sustainability, environmental literacy, and environmental justice. Let’s forge new relationships, cross-list courses, co-sponsor events, and create interdisciplinary space for our students to thrive.
In that spirit, we invite you to the next event in our ongoing Community Conversation series, a dialogue facilitated by ENVS senior, Andrea Díaz, about the confrontation of implicit biases and the importance of environmental justice education. The event will be a celebration of the work underway and the work that lies ahead. Here's to a better future together. Happy Earth Day, everyone.
