Welcome from the Title IX Office

By Leonardo Wise, September 2, 2022

Welcome to the beginning of the Fall Semester!

The Title IX Office would like to make sure you are aware of resources our office offers.  These resources can be found by going to www.ithaca.edu/share.

At Ithaca College, we strive to have a community where students may experience their education free from sexual harassment, sexual assault, or gender-based discrimination. However, we also understand that sexual assault is a problem worldwide. Statistically, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men will be sexually assaulted while in college. We hope to create a community that does not participate in nor tolerates sexual or dating violence or gender-based discrimination. All students are protected under Title IX, a federal law which states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

Please be aware of New York State’s definition of Affirmative Consent: “Affirmative consent is a knowing, voluntary, and mutual decision among all participants to engage in sexual activity. Consent can be given by words or actions, as long as those words or actions create clear permission regarding willingness to engage in the sexual activity. Silence or lack of resistance, in and of itself, does not demonstrate consent. The definition of consent does not vary based upon a participant’s sex, sexual orientation, gender identify, or gender expression.”

If you or a friend has experienced discrimination based on sex/gender or you’d like to learn about opportunities to engage in prevention efforts, please visit www.ithaca.edu/share.  The SHARE website will offer you information about available resources, how to make a report, and what happens once a report is made to the Title IX Office.
