Guest Speaker Professor José-Luis Giner Ph.D. of SUNY-ESF will be joining us on Tuesday, October 4th in CNS 333 at 12:10 pm will present:
Making prickly cholesterol for hedgehog protein and sponge sterols from bacteria.
Sterols were important for the ancient development of eukaryotic life, and they are important today in embryonic development because of hedgehog protein. Hedgehog protein is the only protein known to covalently incorporate cholesterol. Our lab at SUNY-ESF is synthesizing steroidal probes to better define the cholesterol-Hedgehog interaction, which may lead to cancer treatments. In addition, we are carrying out biosynthetic experiments to better understand the ancient origins of sterol biosynthesis.
