Guest Speaker Professor Huiyuan Guo, Ph.D. of Binghamton University will be joining us on Tuesday, October 18th in CNS 333 at 12:10 pm will present:

Contaminants in Environmental and Biological Systems: Source, Transformation, and Impact.

Public health and economic development are challenged by environmental safety crises. Current threats to environmental and human health include the Covid-19 pandemic, contamination by synthetic microparticles/nanoparticles (e.g., microplastics/nanoplastics in the ocean), endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and many others. Given widespread concerns over chemical and biological pollutants, there is a growing need to investigate their environmental fate and impact. My research focuses on the source, transformation, and impact of long-lasting or emerging contaminants in environmental and biological systems. Specifically, my group is interested in using innovative approaches to track contaminants in environmental and biological matrices. We have developed several new methods to detect emerging pollutants in environmental waters, biological tissues and consumer products, which provide practical and effective tools for predicting their environmental source, transformation and impact. Further, I will discuss our findings and perspectives on innovative applications of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in analyzing the environmental distribution and transformation of chemical and biological pollutants.
