Nationwide, colleges, and universities recognize November 8 as “National First-Generation Day” due to the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). The signing of HEA was pivotal in creating equity among colleges and universities for minoritized Americans, and those who come from a low socioeconomic background.
This year, Ithaca’s First-Generation Center is hosting our Inaugural “First-Generation Week” from Monday, November 7- Thursday, November 10 to highlight our continued commitment to Ithaca College’s first-generation students.
We will be kicking off our First-Generation Week with an Open House on Monday, November 7 from noon- 2 pm at The First Gen Center in Egbert Hall 339, Campus Center. Come check out the space, get a snack, and possibly win a prize!
On Tuesday, November 8 from 11:30 am- 1pm in Clark Lounge, Campus Center the First Gen Center will be hosting our Annual First Gen Celebration Day! Come connect with the first-gen community, have lunch from Luna’s and win some prizes.
On Wednesday, November 9, the First Gen Center is hosting a Tri-Alpha Honor Society Information Session. Founded on March 24, 2018, on the campus of Moravian University, Alpha, Alpha, Alpha (Tri-Alpha) strives to give leadership opportunities, visibility, mentorship, and community among the first-generation community. This honor society strives to highlight the academic and professional successes of first-generation students. This academic year, the First Gen Center will be hosting our first induction ceremony to formally charter the Epsilon Sigma Chapter at Ithaca College. Interested faculty and staff can come to the 12-1pm session and interested students can come to the 6 pm session. Both sessions are being held in the Ithaca Falls Room in the Campus Center.
We will be finishing our week with a Paint & Sip on Thursday, November 10, from 6:30-7:30 pm in the Six Mile Creek Room, Campus Center.
