Windows 11 Upgrade Coming Spring 2023

By Andrew Hogan, November 11, 2022

Information Technology is excited to announce that beginning in January, and throughout the remainder of the Spring, the College will be migrating to the Windows 11 operating system for all college owned Windows computers.

How Does This Impact Me?

The Windows 11 upgrade will be included as part of the standard ‘Windows Updates’ that routinely occurs and will take around 15-30 minutes to complete.  Additional communication regarding the upgrade dates will be sent directly to individuals that will be impacted.  In addition, individuals will have the ability to delay the update (up to 14 days) by responding to the options in the upgrade pop-up window.

What Changes in Windows 11?

In addition to enhancing security, Windows 11 comes with several new features that help enhance the user experience.  Information Technology will be publishing a more detailed summary of the Windows 11 features in upcoming Intercom articles and direct email communications.  Highlights of some of the new features include:

  • An enhanced centered taskbar
  • Wider variety of useful widgets
  • Four snap layouts that will allow easy screen space management
  • An enhanced Settings navigation
  • The ability to have multiple desktops

Preparing for Windows 11:

Over the next few weeks and throughout the Spring, the Information Technology team will be taking several pro-active steps to help ensure the transition to Windows 11 is relatively seamless.  This will include:

  • Setting up demo computers to allow faculty and staff to immerse themselves in Windows 11 before having it deployed to their computer.
  • Providing several ‘Get acquainted with Windows 11’ workshops (in person and virtual). These sessions will also be recorded and available to faculty and staff.
  • Providing links to instructional videos highlighting the differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • Creating knowledge-base articles and a weekly Windows 11 ‘tips and tricks’ submission in Intercom.
  • Offering individual one-on-one review sessions that faculty and staff can schedule at a day / time that is convenient for them.

Please contact the Information Technology Service Desk if you have any questions.  Thank you.
